It’s time to shout louder

This time last year, I was still in the haze of working post-maternity leave. (Maternity leave is a myth for the self-employed. But I’d taken a few months out, and adopted a slightly slower pace, after my son was born.)

The fog lasted longer than I expected. I had grand plans for my return to the heights of business. But I hadn’t planned on being ill. Really quite ill, in fact. Which slowed down my post-birth return quite dramatically.

The good news is that it was a temporary thing that’s all over and done with: I’m fine now, and have been for ages. The better news is that it gave me a giant kick to hit 2018 head-on. And that’s exactly what I did.

Honestly? I didn’t expect my business to build back up as quickly as it did. Nor did I think that it’d grow beyond where I’d been before the fabled ‘mat leave’ as rapidly as it has. A mix of hard work, determination, and some bloody lovely clients are to thank.

I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved this year. But I’ve not done a great job of shouting about it. Being ill, and admitting to it, can make you feel pretty vulnerable.

As my client base has gone from strength to strength, my own business development has taken a bit of a back seat. My own blog has a few posts missing (huge slap on the wrist). My social media has been sorely neglected. And my grand plans for business growth are yet to be put into action.

Why am I sharing this? Accountability, for one thing. I’ve said it out loud now, so it has to happen, right?

And because 2019 marks a change. A chance to get those plans into action. To bring on board those wonderful people with skills I don’t have (accounting and admin to name just two) and let me focus on what I do best, both for myself and the clients I work for.

I’ll see you around much more often. Until then, I’m joining almost every other wise business owner I know and downing tools over the Christmas period. The office door’s due to close on 20th December, reopening on 2nd January. These batteries need recharging with some mulled wine and a mince pie.

Have a brilliant break.
